Most Common Transmission Problems

When you’re driving through the streets of West Chester, Philadelphia, Ardmore, Springfield, Exton, and Wilmington, the last thing you need to deal with is a car problem. Whether it’s a flat tire or an engine stall, any issue with your car needs to be dealt with quickly and efficiently. One of the most important components of your vehicle is its transmission. If the transmission is experiencing problems, you must get it repaired as soon as possible. Luckily, our team at Kia of West Chester want our customers and neighbors to drive with confidence and safety, so read on to find out what common transmission problems your car may be having.

Low Fluid

In order for your transmission to work properly, you need transmission fluid. If you have problems with your transmission, it may be due to the fluid being too low. Low fluid is typically caused by leaks in your transmission system. If this is the issue, then you’ll have to get the transmission gasket seals replaced along with fluid added. In other circumstances, the fluid is simply contaminated, and just needs to be flushed and replaced. Sometimes, the radiator coolant will leak over into the transmission system, which causes cross-contamination. When this happens, you’ll have issues changing gears, including slippage and slow shifting.

Torque Converter

When you’re suffering transmission problems, the torque converter could be the culprit. Damaged needle nose bearings in your torque converter can damage the transmission, as it’ll cause grinding and other sounds you dread to hear on the road. If you want to test this, put your vehicle in neutral and compare the sounds it makes to when it’s driving. If neutral sounds fine, while driving gears sound like they’re grinding and brushing, your transmission problem is with your torque converter.

Solenoid

Transmission fluid flow is directed by the solenoid. If you have low fluid levels or other electronic problems, your solenoid could be damaged. The symptoms of this problem mimic what you’d find if there’s a fluid leak, so if you experience slippage and slow shifting and you can’t find any leaks, get your solenoid checked.

Clutch

Inside the torque converter rests your clutch, which can become jammed. A jammed clutch means the solenoid has a problem making its calculations regarding transmission fluid. You can typically tell if you have clutch problems because you’ll hear violent shaking sounds and experience considerably less power in your engine. You’ll also experience the same symptoms as you would with low fluid, slow shifting, and slippage.
