How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

Transmission Fluid

One of the most common transmission problems you may encounter is low transmission fluid. Without the proper amount of non-contaminated fluid, you could experience serious transmission problems, such as slow shifting and gear slippage. If you want to avoid this, make sure you check your transmission fluid before you go to a mechanic.

Sometimes, the problem is easier to fix than you might think. Learn more about how to check your transmission fluid and discover how much you can get done before you even call a mechanic.

Transmission Dipstick

Take Out the Dipstick

The first thing you need to do is pull out the dipstick. When you do this, make sure the engine is running and the vehicle is shifted to park or neutral. The engine needs to be warm in order for this to work, so don’t forget to put your parking brake on.

The dipstick will be in a specific place, depending on whether your vehicle has front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. For FWD vehicles, the dipstick will be located by the transaxle. This is by the front of your vehicle next to the oil dipstick. If you have a RWD vehicle, the dipstick is located near the back, usually behind the oil dipstick. Consult your vehicle’s manual to make sure you’re grabbing the right dipstick.

Examine the Fluid

It may sound messy, but the best way to check your fluid quality is to dip your finger on the dipstick and rub the fluid between your finger and your thumb.

Ideally, the fluid will be virtually clear with only a slight pinkish hue to it. The reason you need to feel it is because particles in your fluid are bad news. If you feel debris similar to tiny grains of sand, your fluid is no longer useful. Make sure to take a good whiff as well. You shouldn’t smell anything burning or burnt, but if you do, it’s time to flush the system and get your fluid replaced.

Repeat

Sometimes, even if your fluid is texturally fine, your transmission could still lack the proper amount. See if the fluid line on your dipstick reaches the full mark. Clean the dipstick with a rag that doesn’t leave lint on it and reinsert it. Using a funnel, fill up your transmission fluid until it reaches the full line.

Be careful not to overfill, and make sure you do this only when you’ve made sure the fluid in your transmission is viable.
