According to the experts, you should get your Kia Sportage’s oil changed every 5,000 miles
—if your Kia vehicle’s model year is 2018 or after, that is. On the other hand, if you’re driving a Sportage from 2017 or before, you can change it every 7,500 miles. However, depending on your typical driving habits, you might want to do it sooner, regardless of when your Kia was built.

Some Early Warning Signs
You might have to get your oil changed sooner if you’re noticing any of the following signs and symptoms.
- Exhaust Smoke or Oily Smell: If the exhaust that’s coming out of your tailpipe is thick and smoky (or if your Sportage’s cabin smells like burning engine oil), don’t wait until it’s been 5,000 or 7,500 miles.
- Unusually Loud Engine Noises: Knocking or banging noises coming from the engine are also signs that can’t be ignored. This could mean that your engine isn’t lubricated like it should be—it needs new oil.
- Dark, Dirty, or Unclear Oil: Your oil should be clean, which means that it should be a semi-clear, amber color. If it’s not, then it’s time to schedule an oil change with our Kia of West Chester Service Center.

Engine Oil 101: The Basics
All of this talk about oil raises an interesting question
—what does it do, anyway? Well, as your engine runs, there are thousands upon thousands of moving parts that are rubbing up against each other. Both conventional and synthetic engine oils lubricate these parts so that you don’t have a total engine failure.
One further note. If you’re still unsure of the differences between conventional and synthetic oils, we do recommend that you read through our blog post on
the type of oil that your Kia car needs. It’s very helpful!
