Why Is My Steering Wheel Shaking?

Driving on the roads of West Chester, Philadelphia, and Ardmore should always be a breeze. However, there are times when something might not feel right as you take that next turn in Springfield or head to Exton for the afternoon. The steering wheel might feel a bit shaky. You might ask yourself: “Why is my steering wheel shaking?” The Kia of West Chester team is here to provide an answer to that question for Wilmington drivers as well. Visit our service center if your steering wheel is shaking today!

Steering Wheel Shaking When Hitting Brakes

If the steering wheel is shaking as you try to bring your car to a stop, then the issue is likely related to the brakes. You can test to see if your car is pulling to one side of the road when hitting the brakes. If you can detect that this is the case, then the brakes are likely the issue. Most cars have a disc brake system, where the brake rotor is attached to the wheel. Brake pads, which are attached to the caliper, exist to protect the caliper and rotor. So, if the brake pads are worn down, they may need to be replaced. Thinning brake pads will make noise, so if a screeching sound joins the shaking wheel when hitting the brakes, it’s likely time to replace the pads.

Steering Wheel Shaking While Driving

If the steering wheel starts to shake, typically around 50-55 MPH, then it’s likely a tire concern. If you purchased a new tire recently, it might not have been balanced. This can cause shakes in the steering wheel. New tires need to be balanced, so the weight is being evenly distributed.  It’s also possible that the tires may be out of alignment. Check the tire tread on your tires and see if any of the tires have more wear and tear on them than the others. Hitting a pothole or curb can require more frequent alignment. If the wheel shakes even when you’re driving at low speeds, then we’ll be sure to take a look at the suspension. Also, if the car is shaking when you turn the key or when idling, then there may be an issue under the hood. We’ll be sure to take a look in order to return your car to the road as soon as possible.
